Decluttering can be a refreshing process that helps create a more organised and peaceful living space.
Set clear goals: Define your decluttering goals and envision how you want your space to look and feel. Having a clear vision will motivate you throughout the process.
Take it step by step: Tackling the entire space at once can be overwhelming. Break the task into smaller, manageable sections and clear one area at a time. This will help you stay focused and motivated.

Categorise and sort: Create categories for your belongings, such as ‘keep’, ‘donate’, ‘sell’ and ‘throw’. Sort items accordingly, making decisions based on their usefulness, sentimental value, and condition. Place each item in the appropriately labelled box or bag, as you go through your belongings.

Sub-categories: Decluttering by item types, rather than room by room, can be more efficient for some people. For example, focusing on clothing, books, cleaning products, or toys etc., gathering all similar items from different areas of your home.
Clear out storage spaces: Pay attention to closets, cabinets, and other storage areas. These spaces often accumulate clutter. Sort through items, remove what you no longer need, and organise the remaining.

Evaluate sentimental items: Sentimental items can be challenging to declutter. Ask yourself if they truly bring you joy, or serve a purpose. Are they destined to be shoved away in a cupboard or drawer forever? Would they be of use to someone else in the family? Consider taking photos of sentimental items, before letting go of them, to preserve the memories.

Create storage systems: Establish storage for organizing your belongings. Use storage containers, labels, and shelves to keep items in designated places. For instance, paperwork (once sorted) could be stored in box files on a shelf, in a filing cabinet or set of drawers, even in pretty baskets on top of a wardrobe. This will help maintain a clutter-free environment.

Let go of unused items: Be honest with yourself about what you truly need and use. Do you have clothing you keep just in case you manage to lose weight? Let’s face it, if you haven’t got into that dress in the last couple of years it probably won’t even suit you, your lifestyle, or current fashion trends, should you ever reach that goal. If you haven’t used an item for over a year it may be time to let go and create space for the things you value most.
Donate or sell: Instead of discarding usable items, consider donating them to charities or selling them online or through garage sales. That way, someone else can benefit from items you no longer need.

Maintain a regular decluttering schedule: To prevent clutter from accumulating again, schedule regular decluttering sessions. This could be a monthly or seasonal routine, to stay organized and keep your space clutter-free.
Remember, decluttering is a personal journey, and it’s okay to take it at your own pace. Celebrate your progress along the way, then relax and enjoy the benefits of a calm and more functional home!
